Housing + Growth

If we grow wisely, Boulder can evolve without losing what makes our town unique.

Where we are

Boulder is on an unsustainable path. We are living with ever increasing traffic congestion and tens of thousands of in-commuters.  Our sky-high home prices and housing affordability crisis are coupled with soaring property taxes.  Housing options for all but the wealthiest residents are scarce. These factors are driving an exodus of middle income families. K-12 school enrollment continues to shrink.

Where we want to be

A  vibrant, equitable, and resilient community that meets the needs of Boulder residents and maintains a healthy balance between the built and natural environments. We want growth that meets the needs of residents of all ages and income levels.

How we get there

Thoughtful, creative planning. Imagine transforming underutilized commercial areas into new neighborhoods with a vibrant mix of retail and small-scale housing options like townhomes, row houses, and four-plexes that would be attractive to and financially attainable for a broader swath of residents at all stages of life and some in-commuters. We need to consider other strategies such as encouraging CU to provide more student housing, exploring the planning reserve, and considering countywide plans to share job creation.
